Th eline re Printing The Legend is the opposite of waht Ford is telling his audience. He is telling the truth and illustrating waht happens tolives by living a lie. The final sequence, Stewart lighting a cigar and a train conductor readking the line: Nothing is to good for The Man Who Shot LIberty Valance absltely destroys Stewaret. He built a career, won a wife, on a lie. That is the point of this outstanding film. Wayne's character is clearly central. Stewart has more screen time, but Wayne dominates in both performance and story substance. He is the title character. When he's not on, it's about him.

I regret the typos in my comment above. Not the man I used to be.

None of us are, Barry. I agree that Wayne, even with less screen time, dominates the movie.
