The movie is all show and little substance.

You do not die in a dream, you get lost in one. How does that manifest itself in the real world? Does your body lays lifeless in a coma, while your mind is active in a dream that you cannot wake up from?

Yes

The biggest hole, I say biggest because there are so many holes at so many varies degrees, is the fact that plot is self defeating. The arc of the story is when Cobb frees himself of guilt, a guilt brought on by Cobb from wronging his wife. How exactly did he wrong his wife? He planted an "idea" in her head so she would leave and be in the real world and with her children again. This is the weakest part of the plot. If it had been made clear why he regretted his actions, then his liberation would have resonated more the audience. I would think that with a movie with run time of 142 minutes would have had no problems accomplishing this. I suppose adding more scenes to devolop the plot would have caused other scenes to be cutt, like watching a van drop slow motion into a river.

How did everyone else wake up on the plane? The last scene they were shown in they were swimming out of the river in the first level of the dream? Guess that didn't need to be covered either.

Did they even have kids, or was that just a dream?
#9 - Eric - 01/29/2011 - 05:01
They had kids. He gets reunited with them at the end when he finally gets to go home.
#10 - Patrick - 01/29/2011 - 14:22
Or was that a dream?

Thank you Patrick!!! It seems like this movie has some kind of Jedi mind trick infused in the trailer, "YOU WILL THINK THIS MOVIE IS INCREDIBLE". Just like you said, "weak character motivations". The movie is filled with moments that are supposed to be heart wrenching, but they all come off as stepping stones because no time is spent developing the characters. This could have actually been two really excellent movies had Nolan split the story and given it what it needed.

It was too clever for its own good.
