I agree that Hepburn should have won. Bette won for Dangerous but it was pretty much assumed to be a consolation prize for her not winning the year before for Of Human Bondage.

Eric, I never meant to suggest that the character of Alice Adams was a Hollywood fabrication, on the contrary she is very real and relatable. In the line of mine you quote I was referring to the manner in which Hollywood portrayed small town America.

Okay, I get what you are saying, but the film does not showcase the entire town as a whole. It is mostly centered on the one family and it's struggle to be a success and accepted by the swells of the town.

I don't know if you guys ever do this but I watched this movie again after reading both of your reviews. It had been quite a number of years since I last saw it and I must say that the depiction of the central family was less Hollywoodized than I remembered it being and the mother was more of a harping bitch than I remembered too.

Yeah, she was pretty heinous. Someone should have put her in her place before the end credits.
